DGCA Conducts First Satellite-Based Landing System Trial on Airbus A320 in India

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has successfully completed India's first satellite-based landing system (SLS) approach on a commercial jet aircraft. The trial was carried out using an IndiGo Airbus A320 at Udaipur Airport with the help of India's indigenous GAGAN navigation system.

This achievement represents an important milestone in India's aviation sector and highlights the country's progress towards modern satellite-based navigation. Until now, similar procedures had mainly been demonstrated on turboprop aircraft.

What Happened?

The demonstration involved an IndiGo Airbus A320 successfully performing a Localiser Performance with Vertical Guidance (LPV) approach using the GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) system developed jointly by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Officials believe this successful demonstration could accelerate the adoption of satellite-based precision approaches at airports across India, particularly where conventional Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) are not available.

Understanding GAGAN

GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) is India's Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS). It improves the accuracy, integrity and reliability of satellite navigation by broadcasting correction signals through geostationary satellites.

Instead of depending entirely on expensive ground-based navigation equipment, compatible aircraft can receive highly accurate horizontal and vertical guidance directly from satellite-based navigation systems.

GAGAN: India's Indigenous Satellite Navigation System

GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) is India's Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS), jointly developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI). It was designed to improve the accuracy, integrity, availability, and reliability of standard GPS signals for civil aviation, allowing aircraft to navigate and land more safely using satellite technology.

India became only the fourth region in the world, after the United States, Europe and Japan, to develop and implement its own certified Satellite Based Augmentation System. Unlike conventional GPS, GAGAN continuously broadcasts correction data through geostationary satellites, enabling aircraft to determine their position with much higher precision.

The system consists of 15 Indian Reference Stations (INRES), two Master Control Centres, three Uplink Stations, dedicated communication networks, and multiple geostationary satellites carrying GAGAN payloads. Together, these components provide continuous correction signals across the Indian Flight Information Region and beyond.

One of GAGAN's biggest advantages is that it allows aircraft to perform highly accurate satellite-based approaches at airports that may not have expensive Instrument Landing Systems (ILS). This improves operational efficiency while enhancing safety, particularly at regional and secondary airports across the country.

Beyond aviation, GAGAN also benefits maritime navigation, railways, highways, disaster management, defence, telecommunications, surveying, and many other industries that depend on highly accurate positioning information.
