Airline Pilot Selection Process

Airlines in India follows a structured selection process for hiring cadet pilots and experienced pilots. The selection process includes multiple stages to assess a candidate’s technical knowledge, aptitude, communication skills, and overall suitability for a pilot role.

Written Test

  • The first stage is a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) written test.
  • It covers subjects like:
  • Aviation Regulations & Air Law (DGCA rules, airspace classification, and procedures)
  • Navigation & Flight Planning
  • Meteorology (Weather systems, forecasting, and impact on flights)
  • Technical Knowledge (Aircraft systems, aerodynamics, and instrumentation)
  • General Aptitude & Reasoning (Math, logic, and problem-solving skills)

Candidates must pass this exam to move to the next stage.

ADAPT Test (Psychometric & Aptitude Test)

It is a computer-based pilot aptitude assessment.
• It evaluates:
➢ Cognitive skills (memory, multitasking, spatial awareness)
➢ Hand-eye coordination (simulated control tasks)
➢ Situational awareness (reaction to aviation scenarios)
➢ Numerical & Verbal reasoning
➢ Personality assessment (behavioural traits and teamwork skills)
This test helps determine if the candidate has the right aptitude for piloting

Group Discussion (GD)

  • Candidates participate in a group discussion/Tasks on aviation-related or general topics.

    • This stage assesses:
    ➢ Communication skills
    ➢ Teamwork and leadership qualities
    ➢ Decision-making ability
    ➢ Confidence and clarity of thought

    Performance in GD plays a crucial role in shortlisting candidates for the next stage

Personal Interview (HR & Technical Round)

The final stage is a personal interview conducted by Airlines’ selection panel.
• It consists of:

➢ Technical Interview (Aircraft systems, flight operations, emergency procedures, and DGCA regulations)
➢ HR Interview (Personality, career goals, strengths, weaknesses, and airline-related scenarios)
Candidates who successfully clear all the rounds receive Letter of Intent (LOI)

Sim Check

Simulator checks are designed to assess a pilot’s ability to operate an aircraft safely and efficiently in a simulated environment. and are a crucial part of a Pilots’s training and evaluation process.
They check:

– Decision making
– Technical skills
– Situational awareness
– ⁠Risk management
– ⁠Emergency procedures

Not all airlines conduct sim-checks
